Water quality testing to make the river safer for Beccles residents
Beccles Town Council are leading a team of volunteers to carry out ‘citizen science’ water quality testing in the River Waveney. This is a local project run in conjunction with Deben Climate Centre. Volunteers take samples from points along the river every two weeks, although this will reduce to monthly in winter. We are currently testing at Waveney Meadow in Puddingmoor, at Beccles Quay. Citizen Science testing also includes adjacent to Beccles Amateur Sailing Club and adjacent to the Dunburgh pumping station. The testing covers e-coli and phosphates and provides a snapshot of the water quality.
Once we have a set of results, we will publish these on this website.
We are looking for volunteers to help with the testing – please contact us at admin@becclestowncouncil.gov.uk if you would like to join the team carrying out this testing.
The council is also working with River Waveney Trust (RWT) and Beccles Lido Limited to test the water quality adjacent to the Lido. This project has funding to allow for official Environment Agency approved laboratory testing, the aim being to work towards bathing water quality designation. We will be working with RWT to publicise the results of this testing, including information boards at various points across the river to display the current water quality status.
