The Fenland Trust owns and manages the large expanse of grazing marshes by the River Waveney to the north of the town centre. These lands were part of the Charter lands given to the people of Beccles by Queen Elizabeth I in 1584.
The Trust works with the Broads Authority and Environment Agency to manage the marshes, including the network of dykes that criss-cross the site, as a wildlife habitat.
Much of the Marsh area is now let to Beccles Farms for grazing cattle, but public access to much of the site has been retained through the Marsh Trail, a series of walks around the marshes, varying from one to three hours.
