William Ellard, who won two gold and one silver medal at the Paralympic Games in Paris in the summer, was presented with the ‘Honorary Freedom of Beccles’ by Town Mayor Cllr Colin Hill at a ceremony in Town Hal on Monday 4th November.
William, 18, becomes only the fourth ever recipient of this honour, following fellow paralympic swimmer Jordan Catchpole and Nobel Prize winning scientist Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin.
Cllr Hill congratulated William on his outstanding achievements in Paris, including breaking a world record in winning one of his gold medals. William’s father David replied on William’s behalf, thanking the council for their recognition of William’s achievement and saying that William will shortly be back in training in preparation for the World Championships in Singapore in September 2025.
